This is UpTown Station, UBER’s San Francisco headquarter expansion. UBER’s Move to Oakland is a resounding affirmation of the Oakland Renaissance that many in have hoped for. The overflow of wealth from Silicon Valley and San Francisco has reached Oakland, which is still “affordable”, and very hip. Corporations are establishing a place in Oakland, attracting employees and employers with hip neighborhood restaurants and hangouts. UpTown Station represents a change of the old/outgoing Sears, and new/incoming UBER, that embodies the modern life style conveniences that the Sears catalog at one time exemplified the modern and efficient way to shop. UBER purchased this formerly HC Capwell, formerly Sear Department Store building from Lane Partners and has been rehabbing this building since 2015. The new UpTown Station is expected to open in 2017. The $40 million restoration will open up long-closed retail shop windows and feature a central atrium allowing natural light to flow throughout the building, which will also connect to the 19th Street BART Station. What will this magnificent addition to Uptown Oakland look like? Will this mark Oakland’s economic turnaround? See this transformation before it is unveiled.
